One of the most common questions we get at JMJ is about shelf life. Cold-pressed juice looks and tastes fresh — but how long does it actually stay that way? Here's everything you need to know to get the most out of every bottle.
How long does cold-pressed juice last?
Unopened cold-pressed juice kept refrigerated at all times lasts 3–5 days from the press date. Once opened, drink it within 24–48 hours for peak nutrition and flavor.
This is significantly shorter than store-bought juice — and that's actually a good thing. The short shelf life is a direct result of not using heat pasteurization or preservatives, which means the enzymes, vitamins, and minerals are fully intact when you drink it.
Why does cold-pressed juice expire faster than store-bought?
Conventional juice is pasteurized — heated to high temperatures to kill bacteria and extend shelf life. That process works, but it also destroys a significant portion of the nutrients and enzymes that make juice worth drinking in the first place.
Cold-pressed juice skips the heat entirely. The result is a more nutritionally complete product that your body can actually use — but one that needs to be consumed fresh.
Can you freeze cold-pressed juice?
Yes — freezing is a great option if you want to stock up. Cold-pressed juice can be frozen for up to 30 days without significant nutrient loss. Thaw in the fridge overnight and shake well before drinking. Avoid microwaving to thaw — heat will degrade the nutrients you're trying to preserve.
How to tell if cold-pressed juice has gone bad
- Smell: A sour or off smell is the clearest sign
- Taste: Noticeably fermented or vinegary flavor
- Appearance: Separation is normal and just means shake it — but unusual color changes or visible mold are not
- Bubbles: Carbonation or fizzing in a juice that shouldn't be fizzy indicates fermentation
Tips for maximizing freshness
- Keep bottles refrigerated at all times — don't leave them out at room temperature
- Drink in the order you received them — oldest first
- If you can't finish your order within 4 days, freeze what's left immediately
- Keep bottles sealed until you're ready to drink
